I will try to answer a few question you might have before you up grade to the zero turn radius lawn mower.

What is a zero-degree-turn radius?

The term refers to the turning radius of the machine. Essentially it means that the lawn mower needs zero inches to make a turn. It will turn in on itself.

Professional landscape contractors use to be the only one that could afford a zero turn mower. The low end grasshopper being 10 grand plus. But times have change and prices have dropped. And a lot of homeowners are upgrading to the zero turn mowers.

The main difference between a lawn tractor and a zero turn mower is, instead of front wheel steering, you have two independent wheel motor on each rear wheel. Each wheel motor has it's own steering handle. With independent steering one wheel can go forward and the other backwards. The result is that you turn on a dime. With this infinite maneuverability you can literally cut your mowing time in half.

How to steer a zero turn mower?

You have two steering handles attached to two independent wheel motors. When you push the left handle forward the left wheel motor moves forward. When you pull the left handle back you make the left wheel motor go in reverse. The neutral position is stop, you have no foot brake only a parking brake.

How difficult is it to drive a zero turn mower?

Most people are comfortable with the way a zero turn mower handles after a few mowing of their lawn. You just push the handles forward to go forward and pull the handle back to slow down or go in reverse. To go straight just make sure you have the same amount of pressure applied to both handles. To turn right, push the left handle forward. To turn left push the right handle forward. To stop put the handles in the neutral position. To go faster push both handles forward. To slow down pull both handles back. Now, that doesn't sound difficult.

Why does a zero turn mower cost more?

The zero turn mower was designed for the professional landscaper. It has two motors and two hydrostatic transmissions. Zero turn mowers usually have larger engines, larger decks, stronger frames and, overall, more steel in their construction.

Because zero turn mowers cut your mowing time in half, less gas is required to cut your lawn. Shorter run times also means less wear and tear on belts and pulleys for longer machine life.

Zero turn mowers and slopes

It is not recommend, by Ariens and Gravely, to mow on slops over 10 degrees. ( most slops on road ways are less than 10 degrees, 20 degrees is difficult to stand on). You see, the drive wheels are on the rear wheels. If they are spinning or sliding you will not have control.

If you operate a zero turn mower on slopes lesser than 10 degrees, keep the following recommendations in mind:
  • Keep all movements on the slope slow and gradual
  • Mow up and down slopes, not across them
  • Avoid starting, stopping or turning on a slope
  • Do not mow on wet grass
