summer flower bed in full bloom
In this post I have some tips with videos, they should get you started. Creating and caring for a new lawn can be a bit more challenging than maintaining an existing lawn. It should not be attempted without arming yourself with some vital information first.

The following new lawn care tips and techniques will get you well on your way to creating a great looking lawn. We will also learn about some new lawn care equipment that you might want to look into.

This is a fertilizer that I used in Florida on new lawns. No matter who spread it they didn't burn the new sod. In Florida you almost always use sod. Instant yard. Milorganite 6-2-0 Organic Nitrogen Fertilizer, 50-Pound (with free shipping)

Preparation

The most important new lawn care tip you need to know is how to properly prepare the soil. The soil is the foundation of a great looking lawn. If it’s not done correctly, you are setting yourself up for problems later on. This starts with proper tilling of the soil. The soil should be loose and soft to allow the seeds to germinate quickly and successfully. It is also a good idea to fertilize the soil before you start planting as well. This will provide the nutrients necessary to get your lawn off and running.

Grass and Lawn Maintenance : How to Prepare Soil for Grass

To prepare soil for grass seeds, work on top of hard clay or poor soil by adding layers of organic compost and potting soil. Rake in the new grass seeds on the top layer with lawn care tips from a sustainable gardener in this free video on growing grass.

Since preparation is the most important step, it is the foundation of your lawn, I've given you two videos. Neither one tells you to break up your ground. But, down south, in Southern Alabama you need to incorporate your additive as deeply as possible. We will have a drought every year. August will be dry and on the worst years, all of July also. So we need a deep root system.

The amendments I like to use are lime with calcium (extremely good for the food we eat), peat-moss (for aeration and moisture retention), blood meal (plant growth), bone meal (root growth, but don't go crazy it doesn't leave without being used up by a plant), and a local thing, cotton seed meal (a little added at the root base, after flowering, will make the sweetest watermelon.)

A lawn worker describes how to prepare an area for seeding by raking, how to seed the grass, and how to properly water the area so that the grass may begin to grow.

Watering

Proper watering technique is another vital new lawn care tip. The key is to find the proper balance. Many people think you should completely saturate the soil when you have planted new grass. This isn’t necessarily the case. It is possible to over water your new grass and drown it out. You want it to water it just enough so that the soil doesn’t completely dry out. The amount you water will depend on the weather and how much rainfall it is receiving.
