Winter Lawn Preparation

a fall landscape
Now that winter is upon us, the best thing that you can do for your lawn is to apply a winter fertilizer. Yes, your grass won’t grow in the winter, but still, fertilizing your lawn is one of the most important steps to take before the first frost.

Preparing your lawn for your winter lawn treatment

Before you apply your winter lawn fertilizer it is important to check the thatch.(that’s the dead grass under the green grass) It shouldn't be more than a-half inch. If it is remove it. With too much thatch your winter lawn fertilizer will get absorbed by the thatch and possible burn your grass. And the fertilizer can’t do it’s job till it gets to the root system.

Using sharp lawn mower blades and cutting your grass to a healthy length will help prevent thatch build-up. Aeration will also help prevent thatch build-up and have an overall improving effect on your lawn.

To prepare your lawn for winter it is important to mow your lawn to two to three inches in length. Cutting it closer than two inches makes the root system more vulnerable to the harsh conditions of winter. Leaving it tall than three inches it’s more likely to get bent and smothered beneath the snow. Taller grass will retain more moisture, which can lead to snow mold. Keeping the debris and leaves removed will further minimize the risk of lawn disease and infestation.
