I have images and video to help you to understand "How to Fix Your Lawn Mower Motor"
If your lawn mower isn't starting or working like it used to, this means that there is something wrong. Since your lawn mower is powered by gas, (or electricity not covered) chances are you have a real simple problem to fix. Here are some steps to help you assess what is wrong and then fix the problem.
First, before you get yourself down and dirty, put on some gloves and wear some eye protection. You don't want anything to get on your hands or in your eyes, so it is better to be safe than sorry. The hands are easy to clean, if you don't have hand cleaner for grease and grim, try using Dawn dish soap. It does more than just kill the flea on your house dog, it does cut the grease.
Next, disconnect the spark plug so the engine will not accidentally start on its own when you are trying to find out what is wrong. The first lawn mower shop that I worked for, the owner had only two and a-half fingers on one hand. I have never put my hand under the deck of a lawn mower without the spark plug disconnected.
Before you take apart the motor, examine the spark plug because the problem could be right there in your hand. Spark plugs will conk out due to wear and tear. If this is the case, you simply have to buy a new one and then replace it. Should the lawn mower start and work like it used to then your problem has been resolved.
You should be able to magnify the image with your control key and the + sign. That doesn't mean that it will work but, it should.
If changing the spark plug didn't work, examine the ignition system. The best way to check the condition of the ignition system is by touching the end of the spark plug with a grounded piece of metal. You have to connect the plug back to the coil wire (the wire you took off). Now, with a pair of insulated pliers, not with you hands, ground the plug to the cylinder head and pull the cord. If there is a spark, (it should be blue not yellow) then this is not the problem.
If the spark is weak or yellow, the first thing to do is check the gap to the spark plug. I know it was present but, that means nothing. Check it anyway. If the plug is good (new once a year) take off the shroud (304). Where the pull cord goes in. There is just a few bolts holding it on. You have to get to the flywheel (23). On the flywheel there is a magnet it is probably rusty. Take some Emory cloth and clean the rust off of the flywheel and the coil (333) end that are close to the magnet.
When you have them clean you have to take two 10mm feeler gauge (business cards use to be 10mm thick) and gap the magnet and the coil. Tightening the two bolts (335) that you loosened to gap them with. If the problem is solved you can take the flywheel and flick it back and forth, getting a spark.
If you still don't have a spark it is that black box underneath the flywheel. (They don't have a set of points any more.) You will need a flywheel puller. You can use two large screwdrivers and a hammer. But, you can break the flywheel really easy. You might be better off bringing it to a service center rather than working on it yourself. If you want to try the video below will help.

How to replace the Ignition Module (COIL) (PART #34443B) on your craftsman Lawnmower with Tecumseh Engine. Visit my channel for more repair videos; youtube.com/user/donyboy73...
If you have fire and still it won't start, take off the air filter, and squirt or pour a little gas in the carburetor, (a little) pull the cord and the lawn mower will start and run till the gas is burned out and it won't start again, without more gas. This means that you have a gas flow problem. If you have carb problems you will need some carburetor cleaner which you can get at a auto part store. You soak the carburetor over night. Use compressed air to clean out the holes, put it back together and preset the jets. Install, start, then adjust.
That's the way that I like to clean a carburetor but the guy in the video below will show you how to use carb-cleaner out of a can and a piece of wire. There are a lot of different carburetors out there and they are all a little bit different. Here is the Briggs and Stratton Repair Manual site

Watch how to complete a full tune up on your lawn mower to help it run perfectly. I show how to replace the blade, spark plug, clean the carburetor, replace the needle and seat, install a new carburetor gasket and do some other general fixing and cleaning. The lawnmower should start right up and run perfectly after this full tuneup. Check out my other videos on lawnmower repair!
The carburetor just like in a car is the number one cause of engine trouble. Make sure that you have the gas filter replaced, the older model had a filter in the gas tank, connected to a clean plastic tubing. Disconnect the gas line and make sure that the gas flows
The problem may also originate from your intake and exhaust valves. This can happen if you don’t change the oil regularly. Unlike the other parts, you can’t clean it and put it back where it is located. You have to buy new ones or take it to a machine shop and get them ground. If you take it to a machine shop you also have to touch up the seats (where they seat in the block of the mower engine). Although this will cost you, it is still cheaper than buying a new lawn mower.

I went to mow my lawn one day and my lawnmower wouldn't start and had no compression.
One part in the lawn mower which is not that significant is the spark arrestor. This part is commonly found in outdoor motors and sometimes it catches sparks. This should also be cleaned because if no action is taken, your lawn mower could catch fire and the best way to do that is with a wire brush.
The lawn mower is made up of many small parts and if you do not take care of it properly, it may conk out on you when you least expect it. To prevent that from happening, do some preventive maintenance work every three or six months. If there is a problem and you don’t know what to do, better get help rather than making things worse.

Briggs and Stratton engine strip down and rebuild time lapse. I have condensed 1 hour and 30 mins worth of filming down into just 12 mins, turning it into a time lapse.
You may notice in this video the sump will not go on without hitting it with a rubber mallet. Upon further inspection it was found the crank shaft was bent, this can be seen in the video. After this video the engine had a crankshaft change.
