Basic Lawn Care Tips

Using basic lawn care tips could have your lawn looking this good
It’s easier than you think to create and maintain a great looking lawn. It requires a little bit of effort, but if you know what you're doing, anyone can make it happen.

The only thing you need is a few simple lawn care tips to get you started. This is what we will be looking at here. Whether you need summer, fall, or spring lawn care tips, these simple steps will work in all seasons.

Lawn Care Tips for Watering

Making sure your lawn gets enough water is one of the most important lawn care tips. Many people just let their lawns go no matter what season or climate they are experiencing. Then they wonder why the grass is starting to turn brown in the dry summer months. The key to effectively watering your lawn is finding the proper balance. This means you want to make sure you are giving it enough water without giving it too much. You don't want to completely saturate the ground, but you don't want to let the soil dry out either.

So when you water, water deep at least one inch. But don't think that you can just turn on the water and forget about it. Your lawn needs time to soak in the water. There is no need to water your driveway or the street corner. Water in intervals. Your be able to tell by watching your yard as you water. When the water starts to run just water another area, and then come back.

Don't water in the daylight hours. You will lose 25% to evaporation (in the summer down south) and it is possible to sunburn the grass. If you live in the South don't water in the late afternoon, the water will sit there all night long and help the funguses grow. The best time is the early morning hours. But lets be real, water when you can but water deep and let about 10% of your grass start to curl. Then water. You want to water deep but, you want the grass to dry-out a bit. (Just a bit) Then water deep. Water deep.

Lawn Care Tips for Your Lawn Mower

Believe it or not, there are actually lawn care tips for using your mower as well. The most important thing to remember with your mower is keeping the blades sharp. If you let your blades go without sharpening them you are actually tearing the grass instead of cutting it. Then the ends will turn yellow in a few day and die. Falling to the ground and creating thatch, which you will have to remove if it gets too thick. Not only does this look bad, it’s also not healthy for your grass.

When you sharpen your lawn mower blade or blades, don't forget to balance them. It is not hard to do, just nail a nail into a stud in your garage and place the blade on the nail. Slowly grind off a lit bit at a time. You can always take a little more off but, you can not add any to it. If you have more than one blade do not take any off the very end of the blades. If you do you will have a tiny little strip of grass left in between the blades. By balancing the blade (the blade, will lay on the nail, horizon to the ground) you will keep vibration down to a minimum and make things last longer.

Lawn Care Tips for Cutting Your Grass

You also want to make sure you don't cut your grass too short. If you cut your grass too short you will expose the root to the sun, creating bald spots and scalding your lawn. This will promote weed growth. Every grass has an optimum cutting height, to promote a drought resistance and healthy lawn. Below I have a short list of grass heights

Short List of Grass Optimum Height List
You read the list by finding your grass and the first number is the height in inches that the grass should be when cut. The second number is the height of the grass that needs to be cut.

Lawn Care Tips for Weed Control

Weed control is another valuable lawn care tip. Weeds not only diminish the appearance of your lawn, they also rob your grass of the water and nutrients that they need to remain healthy. If you are planting a new lawn, make sure you purchase grass seed that is weed free. If you are dealing with an existing lawn, there are a number of different ways to treat it for weeds. This can be done by using any of the many herbicides that are on the market today.

If you have pets or small children, try to find lawn treatments that are organically based. This will be safer for your family and the environment as well. Over time, you will get to know your lawn better and be able to better understand what it needs. You will have a better understanding of which treatments and lawn care tips it responds to. This will allow you to have a great looking lawn for years to come

  1. I cut back on my watering a little bit the past summer and found that my grass actually did better. I guess I had been over-watering in the past. I was glad to find out that I could save water and still have a beautiful yard. Thanks for the tips Reuben. http://www.lawncarefl.com/Lawn-Care-Services-Riverview-FL.html
